In his complex series, Swamp Dogs, George Rodrigue combined print, photography, and varnish on large sheets of aluminum Dibond, resulting in a unique perspective of the Louisiana landscape. Using computer technology, Rodrigue blended his imagination with reality. He painted several versions of the Blue Dog and scanned them into his computer, over-laying them onto his altered photographs of the Atchafalaya Basin, taken by the artist from an airboat during multiple journeys into the swamp. He then manipulated the computer collages, reducing the colors to only five or six, while adjusting levels of saturation and transparency. As Rodrigue explained, “The loup-garou is in the water, through the water, and part of the water.”
Between 2011 and 2013, from hundreds of photographs, Rodrigue completed fourteen original designs for Swamp Dogs. Of those, only six were realized during his lifetime while the others remained within his files, marked “TO DO.”
While Swamp Dogs 1 was produced in an edition of 10, this one was outside of the edition, possibly the first one created by the artist. His good friend, and avid Rodrigue collection, Don Sanders has had this in his personal collection since 2011. While the rest of the edition had an automative clear-coat added, this one does not.
